Scream (1996)

I recently rewatched Scream, one of my favorite movies so I figured it would be a great first review! Also, this will definitely contain spoilers after the review section so if you haven't seen it and you don't want spoilers only read the first two sections!

Summary

Scream takes place in Woodsboro, California, and is centered around Sydney Prescott.  The town is hit by a string of murders, the targets being the teens of Woodsboro High School surrounding the anniversary of Sydney's mother's death (absolutely a coincidence). Sydney quickly becomes the focus of the investigation and the target of the killer. This film is a fantastic mix of comedy and thriller and an iconic 90s film. Scream is almost 2 hours long and directed by Wes Craven (other notable work includes Nightmare on Elm Street and The Hills Have Eyes)

One Sentence Review
Rating: 10/10
I absolutely love this film because of the way it blends horror with comedy as a parody of a horror movie within a horror movie.

The Tiny Details
The small details are what put this film on top for me. The way that Billy was so obviously the killer from the beginning, but other characters were so suspicious that it confuses you. On top of that, two killers are working together which is a concept that was new to me until this movie.

Scream being a parody of a horror movie at its core is also what makes the movie so great. Sydney acknowledges that people in horror movies traditionally run upstairs when they could've run out the door instead, though she ends up locked in her bedroom when up against Ghostface.

My absolute favorite detail though has to be the references to Nightmare on Elm Street because of the shared director. There are two major ones, the first being the janitor of Woodsboro High, dressed in Freddy Kruger's iconic sweater. The janitor's name is also Freddy. The second is Tatum's final outfit, a cropped football jersey with the number 10 on it. The exact same outfit is Glen Lantz's final outfit in Nightmare on Elm, a rather iconic outfit if you ask me. Both are amazing homages to Wes Craven's films and such a fun catch for horror enthusiasts.

The Characters

Since this is the first post, this is how this section will work. I'm going to rank my top 5 characters starting with 5 and working down to my favorite. Best quotes is going to work the same way.

5) Gale Weathers

I respect her dedication to her work, and she is obviously a badass despite still having safety on. While in this movie her character seems more 2d, I've seen all the films and I really enjoy her character development as a whole, starting with this film.

4) Kenny

Kenny did not deserve his fate, bro just wanted to be a cameraman (I assume he loved his job).

3) Sidney Prescott

She's one of my favorite final girls ever. Sidney stands her ground, isn't afraid to call someone's bluff and take the final shot/make the final kill. I may never forgive her for dropping a TV on Stu though.
2) Randy Meeks

I love Randy. His knowledge of the rules of horror movies really adds to the parody aspect of the film. Some of his lines are the most iconic and I couldn't imagine this movie without him.

1) Stu Macher

Comedy king. The fun, insane, with a touch of homosexual friend. I definitely wouldn't like this movie as much if Stu wasn't a major factor to the plot. I haven't written it yet, but I can guarantee Stu will be 80% of the best quotes section.

Best Quotes

5) "Liver alone" - Stu

A pun on leave her alone. With this quote at the beginning of the film, I knew Stu would be my favorite. Also that he was clinically insane.

4) "What's your favorite scary movie" - Ghostface

Obviously, this quote is the posterchild of the film. The introduction to Ghostface and the entire franchise and it is a great one.

3) "Everybody's a suspect" - Randy

Yelling this while everyone from Woodsboro High was in the movie store was not the smartest move but Randy is just so passionate about films (can't relate).

2) "Peer pressure, I'm far too sensitive" - Stu

This line and the delivery had me dying of laughter especially since you can hear Billy ransacking the house in the background.

1) "My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me" - Stu

No doubt the best line in the entire film, my mother and I love to quote this one randomly out loud whenever someone mentions Scream. Peak comedy

An Inspired Playlist

The songs are on this playlist giving me Scream vibes. Some of the songs (School's Out, (Don't Fear) The Reaper) are songs in the film. The rest are ones that just are based on vibes.
Some I think require some explanation:

Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani: It's giving Billy walking up to Randy in the video store after Randy accuses Billy of being the killer

Cherry Bomb - The Runaways: Tatum's national anthem

Who's Afraid of Little Old Me - Taylor Swift: I feel like Sydney relates to this more than anyone

Murder on the Dancefloor - Sophie Ellis-Bextor: More like murder on the kitchen floor but I digress, Stu and Billy, would be in a rendition of Saltburn

Stressed Out - Twenty-One Pilots: It's giving Stu Macher giving into peer pressure

Killing Me - Conan Grey: When Stu and Billy are stabbing each other a little too hard

About Me

Sup! I don't know too much about blogs, so this is going to be a fun journey. A friend of mine had a book vlog a while back and I wrote for that once and it was pretty fun. I'm always told I don't know when to shut up about the film and to start a blog so I can bother people online about it. I love music, basically, all genres. Some of my favorite artists include Taylor Swift, Conan Grey, Queen, Lady Gaga, Fall Out Boy, and Keith Urban. Reading is also a big hobby of mine; Six of Crows is my favorite book, but I also love The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and The Hunger Games. One of my favorite things to do is to sit down and enjoy a nice movie or a couple episodes of a TV show before bed, but I don't really have people to talk about it to in extreme detail, hence the blog. My plan for this vlog is like an informal layout of my thoughts on films that I watch.  I watch everything from comedies to dramas to science fiction to documentaries. However, my favorite genre is...

The Substance

Every year I like to watch all the Oscar-nominated movies for Best Picture. So, in honor of Oscars week, the next 8 will be dedicated to the Best Picture nominees, starting with my favorite. This post does not contain spoilers, but it does describe the film and the overall message as well as use a couple quotes.  The Substance Summary       The Substance  is about an aging actress in the industry, Elisabeth, who gets let go from her job due to her age (discriminatory much). She is devastated, until a doctor recommends her to reach out to a number. That number provides her with a substance that allows her to become a second, physically separate but mentally connected, person, a younger person. The catch, she still has to live in her original body every other week. This leads to the deterioration of her mental health as her second self gets everything she's ever wanted.
