Review
Rating: 6/10
I think if I read the book I would like it more, but it was better than the first one
My Thoughts
It had been a while since I watched part one when I saw this, so I watched a quick YouTube recap. I can confidently say that I understood Dune way better hearing someone explain it to me than actually watching the film. I wouldn't recommend watching these if you aren't prepared to do some research or read the books either before or after the film. Though, I had an easier time following this film than I did the previous one. I still occasionally got lost but not as much, the films don't do well explaining what is happening or why it's happening if you don't already know.
I thought the acting was amazing though, everyone in that film was perfect from a non-dune fan standpoint. Obviously, I have to mention Zendaya because I was so glad she was actually in this film. Using her in part 1 when she appeared in dreams a few times made the advertising feel slightly misleading to me as someone who watched the film for Zendaya. But she had her moment, and she killed it.
The cinematography was also just amazing, my favorite part was the final fight scene with the sun setting just in the middle. You could get sidetracked just looking at how everything was set up and the angles and the colors. All of the factors that went into this film were so methodical and it really paid off.
My Favorite Character
My favorite character, the sandworm. I have no explanation nor reason for this I just think that the sandworms were the best. It might have something to do with the sandworm in Beetlejuice because I love that film, and I relate the two in my mind.
In reality if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Chani. She deserved better and I'll stand by that.
Best Quote
"May thy knife chip and shatter"
Not too many quotes stuck out to me, but this one did. It gives the same vibes as telling someone "I hope your favorite book gets adapted into a movie, but it's completely inaccurate" and I love that. Also, the way that characters delivered this line, especially during the final fight with the sun in the middle that I mentioned earlier, really adds to an iconic cinematic moment.
An Inspired Playlist
The Dune soundtrack is mostly instrumentals, I included the most popular one, Paul's Dream, though it's seven minutes long, which is crazy. Here are some songs I think fit the vibe of Dune:
Skyfall - Adele: I think of this song in every action scene in every movie
Run Boy Run - Woodkid: Also another classic for a running scene for an action shot
E.T. - Katy Perry: They're aliens, no?
Silver Springs - Fleetwood Mac: This is Chani coded to me, especially that subtle anger that is the undertone for the song
For Whom the Bell Tolls - Metallica: Another war song
