Went to the movies today and saw Mickey 17, so while it's fresh in my mind, here is a review, this post will contain spoilers!
Mickey 17
Summary
Mickey 17 is the 17th version of Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), a man who is an "expendable" on a space trip. He is used as a guinea pig for every situation because when he dies, he is printed back to life and given back his memories that are stored on a hard drive. When Mickey 17 is left to die on the ice planet, Niflheim, he is saved by the animals that live on the planet, dubbed Creepers by the politician running the trip, Marshall (Mark Ruffalo). When he makes it back to the ship, he finds that Mickey 18 has already been printed, creating multiples existing at the same time. This is illegal and in the case of multiples occurring, the hard drive is supposed to be deleted along with all existing printed Mickey's. On top of this, Marshall is dead set on wiping out the Creepers and establishing a pure, perfect human race on Niflheim.
One-Sentence Review
Rating: 8/10
It was a funny film, a bit too long (as I usually feel about film), but I enjoyed the messages in it too.
The Tiny Details
While I was watching the film, I genuinely thought it had to be filmed after all the events that occurred last year, even though that wasn't possible. For example, when Mickey 18 tries to assassinate Marshall and just barely grazes his cheek because of lucky circumstances for Marshall. This film came out just at the right time for the tones to be politically relevant, a political figure trying to take over another planet where he could have full control and all power while also being fed ideas from sources outside the government, like the church in this films case, and promising ridiculous things that can't be fulfilled to make people temporarily happy in bad circumstances. While I did like the film for other reasons, I couldn't help but pay special attention to how relevant it is. On top of that, Mark Ruffalo's attempt at a Trump impression made it more obvious who they were trying to portray. From now on I would love for every villain to don a Trump persona. It makes the film even more funny to me no matter how good or bad the impression is.
I also want to recognize how good Robert Pattinson’s acting is, especially since he had to be two people in the same film with wildly different personalities. The special effects did well with this too, when the two characters spent most of their time on screen together in the same shot. The world was incredible, and the cinematography was great. I'm really hoping this one stays in the Academy's minds because I think it would make a really good Oscar nomination.
Favorite Character
I thought Nasha (Naomi Ackie) was the best character, as is predictable based on my past ratings, I like the characters who follow their morals and stand up for what they believe in. Nasha really did that in the film and he speech to Marshell at the end about why he is wrong really resonated with me.
Though, I'd also like to note Pigeon Man (Tim Key), just a man in a pigeon costume. I love pigeons, so his existence just made my day.
